CATARACT CANYON DAY 3

November 13, 2008 Day 3

We woke up on the morning of the third day to 32 degrees and blue sky. We went on a hike up Trin Alcove Canyon and when we got back to the boat at 11 am camp was still in the shade. It is crazy when you want sun in November all you can find is shade and in June through August all you want is shade and all you can find is sun.FOOD SCARE, FOOD SCARE!!!! For some reason there was a food Scare on day 3, We didn't buy enough sweets(COOKIES) so all of the sudden we were treating cookies and chocolate like they were gold. One for you and one for me. The rest of day 3 was uneventful until we got to the River Register at mile 77.5 which was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.
One of my Favorites is of the dam breaking and flooding the canyon.
Then we saw the Dennis Julien Inscription at mile 74.4 on river left.
We camped at mile 72.7 on an island. It was about 30ish degrees when we went to bed at 8 pm. We ate Clam Chowder for dinner and had Graham Crackers and Hersey's Chocolate to we were sick. I also ate Marshmallows, it was good!

CATARACT CANYON DAY 2

November 12, 2008

Day 2

This was are first full day on the the river and there is a lot to be said about entering a canyon from the beginning. As you float free down the Green River from Green River Utah you start out floating through the desert plains and as you approach Ruby Ranch the Sand Stone Landscapes begin to appear on both sides of the river. The Navajo Sandstone across from the Ruby Ranch is very impressive where it pokes up through the desert farm lands that is Southern Utah. There were Geese on the river congregated in a large group near the Confluence of the San Rafael and Green Rivers. There were about 300 of them and they all flew of the water at the same time which was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. We camped on river right at Trin Alcoves at mile 9. Great Canyon but not the best camp in the canyon, it was fine for a small group meaning just two guys having a good time! HAHA!!!!

CATARACT CANYON DAY 1

NOVEMBER 11, 2008

DAY 1

Joe Nielson and I started are trip on November 11, 2008, two months later then we had planned. I admit that it was my fault because I was up in Wyoming hunting with my dad. Joe was not happy with me but to me it was worth it, I had the opportunity to hang out with my dad. I also killed a nice Mule Deer Buck.

Another reason we didn't put on until later is because Joe Nielson, Brady Larsen, and I went to Cody to go boating. We ran the Shoshone River and also we went and did a super low water run of the Honeymoon section of the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River. It was really pretty but beyond low! I can't wait to get on it when there is some water in it!

I am also stoked to get on Crandall Creek in the spring. I hope that I have time in the spring to do some boating before I am either working full time or I go back to the Grand Canyon for the summer!

Joe and I then headed to Southern utah to meet Shannon Finch, John Alsen, and a group of their friends for a one day Westwater. We left Salt Lake City around 10PM because Joe had to some training he was suppose to be done with at like 4 pm. We started up Spanish Fork Canyon and about 30 minutes into our drive we were pulled over for no trailer lights. He let us go if we continued on with the emergency flashers going for the rest of the drive. So we were on our way and we got to Westwater around 4 AM.

Joe and I took his Dory down Westwater for the first time, it went a lot better then I ever thought it would, especially after surfing it in the hole in Little D rapid. It was a great surf session! HAHA!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Shannon Finch ran the domer rock pile at the bottom of Last Chance Rapid, Crazy!!!!!

After the trip we headed back to SLC to just turn around and head out on the Cataract trip. We left one day later then we intended. But Joe kept saying that we left 2 months later then we intended which I finally have come to admit!

We drove to Moab, picked up our permit from Marcus and did our shopping at City Market. Then we headed to Green River State Park in the middle of Green River, Utah to rig our boat for our trip that had no set time limit or agenda. I told my family I would be home for Thanksgiving. After rigging in the sun for about 2 hours this awesome State Parks Ranger shows up and starts demanding permits, safety gear, you name it he wanted to see it, except for our first aid and our patch kit! Good thing because we for got our patch kit! He had no idea what he was talking about. He wanted to see our bail buckets for our kayaks, what a moron! We spent 20 minutes explaining to him why we didn't need bail buckets for kayaks because they don't get water in them! WOW!!!!! All I have to say is WOW!!!!! You have to love the Government!!!!!Then we ran the 5 hour shuttle to Hite. We got back to Green River, found a place to park Joe's car and hiked the 3 miles back to the State Park. By the time we got back to the park it was just about dark. We pushed off and we were on our way! We passed under the rail road bridge with kids fishing and yelling things at us with "Dawg!!!" at the beginning or end of the phrase. We also passed under the Freeway by lining up on the storm drain that looked like a white line painted on the cement but its not, just like the awesome ranger told us to. HAHA! We floated in the dark through shallow rock bars while scraping and putting lots of holes in the floor of Joe's clean one owner raft. We went about 7 miles that night before pulling over to sleep at the sign of man camp at mile 113ish. SIGN OF MAN, SIGN OF MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHA!!!

SOMEWHERE?

SOMEWHERE?

Sometimes you think that life is going where you want it to go and then you come upon a blind drop. In these situations it is easy to just go with the flow and float but I have begun to realize that it is best to scout and find where you want to end up. Then put the moves or pieces to together that are going to get you to this end point. Sometimes it just won't go so it is important to find a solution, even if that requires a long and rigorous portage or hike out and find another run for the next day. If you are prepared then you will know what to do when theses blind drops come at you. I feel I have been prepared in life through my experiences to make the right decision when these drops come at me. Mental toughness is what is going to get me through these decisions in life. I may not always have the cleanest run every time, or I may have a tough portage but I know that these experiences will make me stronger. Life flows down stream if we like it or not, but if we prepare and we are making decisions, we will arrive safely where we have planned to be from the top of the blind drop. These blind drops will become easier navigate!
Here is my somewhere, right now. I am home with my family in Wyoming! I love being home. There is something to be said about the Family!

Trip to Colorado and finally the end of the guiding season!

I made a trip to Colorado on August 28, 2008 for my good friend Paul DiGrappa's Wedding in Vail. It was a great trip for many reasons but most importantly it marked the end to a long and hard worked summer! I started working in mid June after taking 2 classes to finish my undergraduate degree in Business Finance.

Lee's Ferry

I ended up having to leave school early for my first trip of the season. At the beginning of the summer I was planning on doing only 4 trips but I ended up doing 9 or 10. It was full-time plus some! I had maybe 5 days off from June 11th until August 28th, it was crazy!

Moon Flower- Jimson Weed- Sacred Datura

Before I left on my first trip of the year I went on a Westwater one day river trip on the Colorado river with some friends and I ended up inviting a lot of friends from Salt Lake City. One of the people that ended up coming was Emily Allen, who I knew but not really well. We hit it off and she ended up coming with me on a Grand Canyon trip in July. We have been hanging out for the last few months and we are becoming great friends. You can read about our Grand Canyon trip in July on her blog at http://ukulele-emily.blogspot.com/.

I am really happy that my summer job is over but I am a little apprehensive about the future. I am finishing up my personal finance class that I did not finish in the spring and then it is off to the real world. I am happy to be done but play time is over for the most part. I am excited to move on to the next stage in my life, which is WHAT? No Se!!!!!!!!

On our trip to Colorado we went to Vail to go to the wedding. We drove from Vail to Aspen then back to Glenwood Springs. It was a lot of fun to see Paul get married. It was especially fun to just be out in Colorado having a relaxing weekend. We went to the kayak park in Glenwood Springs on the way to Vail and also on the way back. It was a lot of fun and I am so thankful that Emily was willing to let me stop and play. She went on a run through Glenwood the second time we stopped. We also drove through Leadville and that was amazing! The passes we went over were really nice and the temperature was nice even with the rain. We camped at 9000 ft. and it wasn't even too cold. We decided that we would leave Glenwood by 2pm so we would be back to Salt Lake City by 8pm at the latest. But when we stopped to get gas in Grand Junction and got back on the freeway my car battery light came on and I knew we where in trouble, but I kept driving anyway. We made it to about 20 miles outside of Green River and the car died. I knew it was the alternator so I called Marcus Cline in Moab to see if he could do me a huge favor and he did. He showed up with an alternator and we changed it out on the side of the freeway. We made it back to Utah valley by midnight. It was all in all a great weekend. I can't wait to hit up the Glenwood Kayak park again, especially at high water!
